Europe’s Hidden Cultural Gem Comes to Perth: Lithuanian Folk Music and Dance

On Monday, 23 March at 6:00 PM, two celebrated Lithuanian folk ensembles — Dainava Folk Song and Dance Ensemble and Malūnėlis Folk Dance Group — will bring the sounds, rhythms, and colours of Lithuania to Perth for the very first time.
This free public performance offers a rare glimpse into one of Europe’s oldest living folk traditions through powerful singing, vibrant costumes, traditional instruments, and energetic dance.
Dainava, a renowned ensemble from Alytus, Lithuania, is much more than a performing group. It is a cultural collective of singers, dancers, musicians, and educators devoted to preserving and sharing Lithuania’s rich folk heritage. The name Dainava poetically means “Land of Songs,” reflecting Lithuania’s deep-rooted singing traditions.
Their performances combine choral singing with traditional instruments such as kanklės (a Baltic plucked string instrument similar to a zither), birbynės (a traditional Lithuanian reed woodwind instrument), and skudučiai (a set of wooden panpipes played in groups), creating a distinctive sound that has captivated audiences at folk festivals and cultural celebrations across the world.
Joining them is Malūnėlis, a youth folk dance ensemble from Kaunas whose name translates to “Little Windmill.” Known for their joyful energy and beautifully choreographed formations, the dancers bring Lithuanian traditions to life through spinning movements, colourful national costumes, and lively music.
Dedicated to preserving Lithuanian cultural heritage, the ensemble helps young dancers learn and perform traditional national dances. Over the years, the group has gained recognition for its award-winning performances in competitions and dance festivals both in Lithuania and internationally.
This special appearance in Perth is part of the ensembles’ international tour commemorating Lithuania’s Independence Day on 11 March, celebrating the nation’s rich cultural heritage while offering audiences a unique opportunity to experience the beauty, rhythm, and spirit of Lithuania.
Families, culture lovers, music enthusiasts, and anyone curious to explore a rich European tradition are warmly invited.
Come and experience an evening where voices, dance, and centuries-old traditions bring Lithuania to life in the heart of Perth
