Chinese Winemaking Regions -

Ningxia Helan Mountain East Foothills is one of the world’s most exciting emerging fine-wine regions, set between the Yellow River plain and the Helan Mountains in northwest China. Abundant sunshine, dramatic day–night temperature shifts and mineral-rich, free-draining soils create ideal conditions for quality viticulture. Winters here are extreme, requiring vines to be buried for protection — a labour-intensive practice that speaks to the dedication of local growers. Cabernet Sauvignon, Marselan, Chardonnay and Riesling thrive, producing wines of power and precision, vivid fruit and growing international acclaim.

Yunnan Shangri-La offers a striking contrast. The world’s lowest-latitude, highest-altitude ice wine region, it is defined by dramatic alpine conditions and remarkable purity. At its heart is Pabala Winery, a pioneer of Chinese ice wine and the first dedicated producer in Shangri-La. With more than two decades of focus and 5,300 acres under vine, Pabala has become one of the world’s largest ice wine producers, crafting naturally frozen wines that capture both the intensity and beauty of this extraordinary landscape.
